Position Overview
- Provide a high-visibility public safety presence in designated health locations (e.g., the emergency department, metal detection posts, and psychiatric care units).
- Patrol assigned interior and exterior areas on foot to support safety surveillance of UCI buildings and grounds.
- Assist community members in real time by answering calls, gathering key details, and routing the right help quickly.
- Coordinate response support by relaying clear, timely information to officers and campus partners.
- Use calm communication and good judgment to help de-escalate situations and support people during medical or mental health–related calls.
- Monitor access and control entry to restricted areas.
- Respond to fire alarms and support related follow-up.
Required Qualifications
- Valid California driver’s license; able to safely operate a motor vehicle and/or golf cart.
- Able to qualify with and safely use an Electronic Control Device (Taser).
- Demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making in public interactions and high-stress incidents.
- Available to work variable shifts (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays).
- Read, write, and speak English; provide excellent customer service.
- Perform sustained foot and extended standing/sitting post assignments.
- Monitor and operate alarms, radios, and video surveillance systems.
- Communicate clearly and effectively.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Complete IAHSS certification within the first year of employment.
- Complete PC 832 training.
- Valid California BSIS Security Guard license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hospital Security Experience
- Experience working in a University environment.
- Bilingual.
- Associates degree or higher from an accredited institution.
- 1-3 years prior experience working a position that requires interaction with the public and providing services.
