Position Overview

  • Provide a high-visibility public safety presence in designated health locations (e.g., the emergency department, metal detection posts, and psychiatric care units).
  • Patrol assigned interior and exterior areas on foot to support safety surveillance of UCI buildings and grounds.
  • Assist community members in real time by answering calls, gathering key details, and routing the right help quickly.
  • Coordinate response support by relaying clear, timely information to officers and campus partners.
  • Use calm communication and good judgment to help de-escalate situations and support people during medical or mental health–related calls.
  • Monitor access and control entry to restricted areas.
  • Respond to fire alarms and support related follow-up.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid California driver’s license; able to safely operate a motor vehicle and/or golf cart.
  • Able to qualify with and safely use an Electronic Control Device (Taser).
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making in public interactions and high-stress incidents.
  • Available to work variable shifts (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays).
  • Read, write, and speak English; provide excellent customer service.
  • Perform sustained foot and extended standing/sitting post assignments.
  • Monitor and operate alarms, radios, and video surveillance systems.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Complete IAHSS certification within the first year of employment.
  • Complete PC 832 training.
  • Valid California BSIS Security Guard license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hospital Security Experience
  • Experience working in a University environment.
  • Bilingual.
  • Associates degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • 1-3 years prior experience working a position that requires interaction with the public and providing services.
