On Saturday, May 19, 2018 members of UCIPD participated in the 2nd annual UCI Anti-Cancer Challenge (ACC). The event, held this year at the Irvine Great Park, consisted of a kids ride, 5K walk, and bike rides of different lengths. The purpose of the ACC is to raise research funds for the world-renowned UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Alisa Reich, Business Services Specialist, completed the 5K walk. The following participated in a 12-mile ride as part of the UCI Staff Assembly team: Chief Cisneros, Sgt. Bolano, Ofc. Patton, Ofc. Bessolo, and Ofc. Zheng. According to Lt. Frisbee, UCIPD staff from the UCI Medical Center also participated. The weather gods were looking down upon the participants as the skies remained overcast throughout the day. Participants received an ACC medal and a swag bag upon completion of their event. The UCI Police Association sponsored its members who participated in the bike ride. Thank you, UCIPA. Also, thank you to the sergeants who allowed their officers to flex their schedule in order to participate in the event.
Upon the completion of the events, the participants enjoyed The Habit Burger Grill, listened to live music from an 80s band, and mixed with the personnel from the various trade booths. UCIPD staff met with event organizer Carlin Motley, Staff Assembly Chair Nicole Bourbon, and other staff from a number of UCI departments. Officers also chatted with Los Alamitos Police Chief, Eric Nunez. They joked with Chief Nunez about UCIPD being available for mutual aid during the annual Los Alamitos Race on the Base. As part of the ride, the officers rode in formation on their Safariland patrol mountain bikes. The uniform consists of a 5.11-style dark navy polo with shoulder patches, embroidered badge and badge number, officer name and POLICE screen on the back; black undershirt; and 5.11 navy bike patrol shorts. Black shoes and black ankle socks complete the uniform. Each bike is equipped with Code 3 lighting. The officers look forward to implementing more bike patrol on special events and also on patrol as staffing levels permit.
