Subject: UC Irvine Police Department Achieves Prestigious IACLEA Accreditation

UCI Division of Finance and Administration | A message from CFO and Vice Chancellor Mary Lou D. Ortiz

To the UC Irvine community,

I’m pleased to announce that UC Irvine's Police Department (UCIPD) has received accreditation by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA), placing it among the top 10% of university police departments nationwide. This achievement, a key component of the UC Community Safety Plan, follows a rigorous review process announced in June 2024. It underscores UCIPD’s commitment to consistently upholding the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and safety.

IACLEA assessors spent five weeks thoroughly evaluating UCIPD across key areas, including operations, investigations, dispatch, community engagement, crime prevention, training, property and evidence, and professional standards.

Not only did UCIPD meet all mandatory requirements but the department exceeded expectations, achieving 93% of the ‘extra credit’ standards – far surpassing IACLEA’s minimum requirement. This accomplishment was highlighted by the assessors who praised the department’s capacity for sustained excellence.

For the university, this achievement reinforces the importance of campus safety as foundational to student success and institutional excellence. This recognition places UC Irvine at the forefront of campus safety initiatives, serving as a model across the UC system as well as universities nationwide.

The UCIPD accreditation is valid for four years, during which the department will submit annual reports to demonstrate continued compliance to these high standards.

Sincerely,

Mary Lou D. Ortiz
