Subject: Campus Safety Message
Update

Dear UCI
Community, I write to
provide an update on the campus safety action message shared on April 19. We
understand that there are concerns regarding the arrest and incarceration of
a former UCI student who has made threats to the UCI community. The former
student is currently incarcerated on a $1 million dollar bond and remains in
county jail with a trial scheduled to begin on July 20, 2022. We expect that
this individual will remain in custody until at least the conclusion of the
trial. We have been working closely with the Orange County District
Attorney’s office throughout the investigation, apprehension, and now
prosecution of the former student. UCI Police and campus leaders have been
vigilant and proactive about protecting our community throughout this
process. Although we
have no information about any threats to UCI, we have safety measures in
place while the campus community enjoys the end of the academic year and the
upcoming commencement festivities. As a
friendly reminder, please be vigilant and report any suspicious behavior,
persons, or items to UCI Police Department at 949-824-5223. We are
fortunate to have a range of resources of support for our community. Students
who would like mental health and/or well-being support may contact the UCI
Counseling Center at https://counseling.uci.edu/ or 949-824-6457. Faculty and
staff may contact the Employee Assistance Program for support resources. Stay safe, Liz Griffin |
